Schermata 2016-08-30 alle 15.44.02The International Maritime Organization organizes the World Maritime Day Forum 2016 titled: “Shipping: indispensable to the world”. The World Maritime Day will be hosted at IMO Headquarters on 29th of September 2016.

IMO wants to focus the attention on the link between shipping and global society and on the relevant role that IMO itself has as global regulatory body for international shipping. The importance of shipping to support and sustain today’s global society gives IMO’s work a significance that reaches far beyond the industry itself.

The 80%  by volume and 70% by value of the global trade (according to UNCTAD) are carried by sea and are handled by ports worldwide and the percentage is rising in the case of most developing countries. Not only, the import and export of good need a sustainable shipping at international scale.

The expansion of seaborne trade brings benefits for all consumers thanks to competitive freight costs.

In the world than 50,000 merchant ships trade internationally, transporting every kind of cargo. The world fleet is registered in over 150 nations and manned by more than a million seafarers of virtually every nationality.

In the last 50 years and more, IMO has taken care and adopted a complete framework of global regulations covering maritime safety, environmental protection, legal matters and other areas. Under this regulatory framework, shipping has become progressively safer, more efficient and more environment-friendly.
