PANYNJ eager to attract ‘discretionary cargo’

1As ports along the US East Coast gear up for the arrival of neo-panamaxes, the Port of New York & New Jersey is pursuing a strategy of attracting “discretionary cargo” through its rail links, which offer connectivity to the US Midwestern region.

Speaking at Capital Link’s New York Maritime Forum, Patrick Foye, executive director of PANYNJ, highlighted work being done to support this strategy, with $500m already spent and an additional $250m committed to triple throughput through the Greenville rail yard, adjacent to the port’s Global Container Terminal in Jersey City.

Bethann Rooney, assistant director of the Port Commerce Department, added that once the project to raise the Bayonne Bridge is complete – providing an airdraft sufficient for 12,000 teu vessel calls – PANYNJ’s maritime focus will be on densifying and automating facilities in the absence of land for expansion.
