The first trains have arrived at Jaxport’s newly completed Intermodal Container Transfer Facility (ICTF) in advance of its official opening to commercial container movements later this year.
In the meantime the terminal at Dames Point is being used for military training exercises in partnership with multiple US Army units.
These exercises are aimed at expediting the movement of ocean-going military cargo and rehearsing the capabilities of personnel as well as the new terminal.
During the drills, uniformed army personnel are moving nearly 800 pieces of cargo including vehicles, containers and equipment from the rail terminal onto a nearby military ship.
The ICTF has been designed to allow cargo to move directly between ships and trains, speeding up the shipment process and extending the port’s intermodal reach beyond Jacksonville.
Construction of the US$30m facility, which is served by CSX rail lines, was funded through state and federal grants.
