BORN in the first half of the decade starting with 2000 from an initiative of captain Rosario Trapanese and of the Scinicariello ship owning group (Cafiero and Mattioli families), today IMAT – Italian Maritime Academy Technologies is one of the most important European training centres for maritime personnel.
Since a little less than one year the structure has been operational in the new centre (72,000m2) in Castel Volturno, Villaggio Coppola in the area called Pinetamare – north of Naples. The sole director and Manager of the Centre, Rosario Trapanese, tells us that IMAT, after the efforts of the move from the old site in Ischitella, is today an important driving force for the local economy. Its rooting in the territory, the relative knock on effect for the allied industries and, not lastly, its role tied up with professional training of those people that choose to undertake a career at sea make the IMAT, currently equipped with a code of ethics, a point of reference for the maritime district of Campania both for its economic and social impact, taking into account the rich seafaring tradition present in the Neapolitan area. To understand the importance of IMAT, that has a hotel structure of over 165 rooms, a restaurant, 22 classrooms, laboratories, simulation rooms and recreational spaces for sports activities (basketball and tennis courts, a five-a-side pitch, a putting green and a swimming pool), it is sufficient to consider some figures that photograph a recognized reality that is now firmly established on the international circuit of the training centres for seafarers.”On average”, Trapanese explains, “every year on our campus around 4 thousand people pass, of whom one thousand coming from over 78 nations; there are about ninety certified courses among which those for DP Operator stand out”.
The latter have particular importance for IMAT which boasts European leadership in this sector thanks to the availability of modern and technologically advanced equipment. Indeed, in the didactic areas of the centre one finds a 360° Class A Kongsberg DP II simulator conforming to the technical indications of the British Nautical Institute for the issuing of the Dynamic Positioning Operator certification while, the contemporary presence of the only three authorized DP instructors in Italy (captains Modestino Manfredi, Giuseppe Ercolano and the very same Trapanese allows IMAT to guarantee in this specific sector a training offer among the most qualified at the international level. The simulation apparatus is operational in cargo ship and DP operator modes and is currently among the most modern available.
The curriculum of the IMAT Centre is becoming more and more international after recently signing an agreement with Carnival to carry out the training and refreshment courses destined to the personnel employed by the North American company. On July 1st it signed a new contract with the Princess Cruises company (Carnival Group). “With this last passage”, says the manager of the centre, Rosario Trapanese, “there are three agreements with the leading brands of the corporation” (IMAT also boasts the qualification as Official Training Centre for Costa Cruises). For the three shipowning companies in the Carnival Group, the heads of the centre, foresee the involvement of italian personnel employed by Corporation.
