On 12th April 2016, the second pilot action of the Fresh Food Corridor started in the port of Marseille-Fos. The “ASIATIC KING” ship of the COSCO shipping company arrived in the French port, and containers were handled by Seayard terminal operator. This service was organized by LVANTO forwarding agent of the Israeli exporter MEHADRIN, starting from the port of Ashdod. Containers were loaded on a train, operated by EURORAIL, leaving Fos-sur-Mer on April the 13th and carrying 34 reefer containers equipped with genset technology. The train reached 36h later Rotterdam harbour, the main centre of perishable goods storage in Northern Europe.
The peculiarity of the project is to use autonomous reefer on the trains. These temperature-controlled containers are powered by a portable generator genset, on which the reefer power cable is connected as a traditional socket. Designed for rail transport, the genset allows the container to have the necessary energy for the conservation of fresh products. The genset is fixed on the top corners of the container (for older type), or on the notches designed for next-generation boxes. After discharging the containers from the Asiatic King, they were grouped on a reefer area and equipped with Genset (arrived by truck to the terminal) during the day by the Seayard personnel. After regulatory controls, the boxes were transferred to the wagon loading zone and then loaded on the train.
