Environmental compliance and upgrade of the North Sea MoS Felixstowe-Vlaardingen

Tag Cloud

Felixstowe-VlaardingenThe Motorways of the Sea (MoS) link between the core Port of Felixstowe and the comprehensive Port of Vlaardingen (connected to the North Sea-Mediterranean, North Sea-Baltic and Rhine-Alpine Core Network corridors) is a frequent RoRo service between the UK and the Netherlands, connecting the ports by three departures per day in both directions. The action’s objective is to upgrade the MoS link in accordance with the international environmental regulations as well as to increase the quality, efficiency and safety of the ports and terminal operations.  The core element of the action is the installation and deployment of emission abatement technology (hybrid wet-scrubber) on the “Suecia Seaways” mid-size RoRo vessel.

Efficiency, quality and safety improvements of the sea-based transport service on the link will be achieved by the introduction of new a customer communication system and replacement of out-aged, small-scale fuel storage facility, both in the Port of Felixstowe, as well as with upgrade of three link spans in the Port of Vlaardingen. The action will result in environmental compliance of the maritime operations on the link Felixstowe-Vlaardingen, savings of air pollutants and reduced SOx emissions from the maritime transport on the link. In addition, the competitiveness and viability of the sea-based transportation on this MoS link will be sustained.
