Douro’s Inland Waterways, a project co-financed by the Connecting Europe Facility Programme (CEF), aims at achieving an adequate level of navigability conditions in the Douro’s inland waterway, which entails increasing its safety, security conditions and operational performance, namely to ensure safe, sustainable and smoothing traffic flow, and fostering the inland waterway transport in the Douro, especially regarding to freight, in accordance with EU transport policy.
This project has been very successful since its start, and in its first year of operation many goals have been reached. This would notably include, for instance, the completion of a Hydrographic and topographic survey and the identification of the key challenges and needs related to training and certifications, to name but a few.
Very close dissemination events to keep an eye on will take place soon: a first workshop will be held in Godondomar in late April with the FEUP (Faculdade de Engenharia da Universidade do Porto) support, with the theme “Industry”. The next one will deepen Touristic related topics and will take place in Resende while other events will be organized in in Régua and Vila Nova de Foz Côa. Beginning of March the first of two events in Brussels took place, bringing together a number of EU representatives and national stakeholders, further gathering support for the project.
