On the 22nd and 23rd July, the official launch of the Douro’s Inland Waterway 2020 Project took place in Oporto, Portugal.
The project, co-financed by the Connecting Europe Facility Programme (CEF), aims at achieving an adequate level of navigability conditions in the Douro’s inland waterway, which entails increasing its safety, security conditions and operational performance, namely to ensure safe, sustainable and smoothing traffic flow, and fostering the inland waterway transport in the Douro, especially regarding to freight, in accordance with EU transport policy.
The project foresees a study and a deployment plan on this inland waterway, taking into account its importance for the European Transport Core Network and the economic value that it can have for the Douro’s region and the North of Portugal. The project will be managed by APDL-Administração dos Portos do Douro, Leixões e Viana do Castelo, S.A., with the support of external experts and represents a fundamental chance for Portugal as a whole, being the Douro one of the main sources of strength for the region (from the economic, touristic and transport point of view).
On 22nd July, a technical kick-off meeting took place, opened by the APDL President Brògueira Dias.
On the 23rd July an incredibly stunning mini-cruise between Oporto city and the new Cruise Ship Terminal of Leixões marked the official launch ceremony of the event. The enthusiasm of those present denounces a welcoming start for Douro’s Inland Waterway Project.
