Cyber-MAR EU funded H2020 project: WMU Contributes to prepare for emerging and future cyber-attacks.

Cyber-MAR is an effort to fully unlock the value of the use of cyber range in the maritime logistics value chain via the development of an innovative simulation environment adapting in the peculiarities of the maritime sector but being at the same time easily applicable in other transport subsectors. A combination of innovative technologies is the technology enablers of the proposed Cyber-MAR platform which is not only a knowledge-based platform but more importantly a decision support tool to cybersecurity measures, by deploying novel risk analysis and econometric models. CSIRTs/CERTs data collected will be analysed and feed the knowledge-based platform with new-targeted scenarios and exercises.

Through Cyber-MAR, the maritime logistics value chain actors will increase their cyber-awareness level; they will validate their business continuity management minimizing business disruption potential. Cyber-MAR will act as a cost-efficient training solution covering the maritime logistics value chain.

The Cyber-MAR aims

to develop an innovative cybersecurity simulation environment for accommodating the peculiarities of the maritime sector while, being easily applicable in other transport subsectors, with the view to fully unlock the value of the use of cyber range in the maritime logistics value chain.

To achieve its objectives, Cyber-MAR platform will be both a knowledge-based platform & a decision support tool to cybersecurity measures, towards providing business continuity management.

WMU is involved in the Cyber-MAR project funded by the European Commission under H2020 – Innovation Action. This 36-months project was launched on 1 September 2019. The aim is to fully unlock the value of using cyber range in the maritime logistics value chain via the development of an innovative simulation environment adapting in the peculiarities of the maritime sector, but being at
the same time easily applicable in other transport subsectors.
A combination of innovative technologies are the technology enablers of the proposed Cyber-MAR platform, which is not only a knowledge-based platform, but more importantly a decision support tool to cybersecurity measures, by deploying novel risk analysis and econometric models.
CSIRTs/CERTs data collected will be analyzed and feed the knowledge-based platform with new- targeted scenarios and exercises.
WMU will be involved in a number of work packages and will lead work package WP6 “Training and Awareness Raising” aimed to provide cyber-security professionals, the highest degree of scenario-based curricula in simulated real-world cases and to build a modern training approach. In addition, WMU will contribute to the Econometric model development and Econometric model validation
work packages.
Through Cyber-MAR, the maritime logistics value chain actors will increase their cyber-awareness level and will validate their business continuity management, towards minimizing their business disruption potential. Cyber-MAR will act also as a cost-efficient training solution covering the maritime logistics value chain.
WMU staff participating is composed of Dr. Aykut I. Ölçer-Director of Research,  Assistant Professor Dr. Fabio Ballini-Principal Investigator,  Dr. Monica Canepa- Project Officer, and Seyedvahid Vakili -Research Assistant.
Participation in the project supports WMU’s commitment to the UN Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 4 aimed to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all, and SDG 9 aimed to build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization and foster innovation. With Cyber-MAR project, WMU’s maritime research agenda is further strengthened, in particular, “Maritime Safety and Security”, and “Maritime Energy Management” Research Priority Areas.
