The Baltic Sea Hub and Spokes Project
The main objective is to facilitate a modal shift from road to sea by providing efficient transport solutions and improving access to markets in Central and Northern Europe. Through marketing of the Baltic Sea Region as one market with an integrated hubs and spokes structure, the aim is to develop more efficient transportation hubs in the Baltic Sea Region with extensive feeder activities. The Baltic Sea Hub and Spokes project is a joint project for the ports of Gothenburg, Aarhus and Tallinn. In a wider perspective and in a later phase, the project will also aim to include other ports in the Baltic Sea geographical area and neighbouring countries.
The activities included in the project are a mixture of studies and real infrastructure investments. The overall aim is a transparency throughout the transportation chain, both for the ports itself but also for the overall shipping community which is achieved by efficient sharing of information through standardised information channels.
Activities included in the Action:
Marine Integration Project – The activity will increase the cooperation between ports in the Baltic Sea Region through efficient information sharing, joint approaches in the security regulations and marketing activities with an aim to promote shipping as an alternative to current transportation solutions. The Marine Integration Project aims to provide tools for a more energy-efficient planning and operational implementation of the feeder network in the Baltic Sea Region. Sharing of real-time operational status and further harmonised security standards will improve the quality of data available for decisions makers in ports, shipping lines and related service providers.
Port Access Aarhus – The activity includes infrastructure investments to and from the port of Aarhus with an aim of increasing the hinterland access to the port and thus facilitates future increase in goods to the port. The investments will lead to an increase in capacity and will attract future goods to and from the area needed to justify calls by global carries to the port.
Port Access Gothenburg – The activity includes infrastructure investments in the hinterland connections to and from the port in Gothenburg. The investments will increase the capacity for the intermodal transports used for the feeding of goods increasing attractiveness for global carriers to call the port.
Design of double track to/from the Port of Gothenburg and interlocking in Gothenburg Central Station – The Activity consists of studies with an aim to increase the capacity and access to the rail infrastructure to and from the port of Gothenburg, with an overall aim of facilitating further increases in the use of intermodal hinterland transports.
Port Security Tallinn – The activity includes investments in port security of the container harbour of Muuga included in the Port of Tallinn organisation. Strategic plans to meet international regulations on port security and develop regulations in terms of access to the port on-going infrastructure investments will help enhance the efficiency enabling improvements in the administrative and physical flow connected to the handling of goods arriving or departing the port.
