An integrated synchro-modal approach is the solution

synchro-net projectMJC2, in collaboration with Fraunhofer, has applied the SYNCHRO-NET principle to scenarios identified by interviewing Short Sea logistics providers operating between UK and northern mainland Europe.

The recent disruption at Calais has forced transport companies to consider alternative routes, and in fact there are cost effective options utilising ports further to the north of the UK that result in reduced truck kms (greener) while still being cost effective and timely. Furthermore the avoidance of the Calais area means lower risk of delay or disruption.

This example is extremely encouraging as it shows that the integrated synchro-modal approach, taking into account the wider range of factors considered by the SYNCHRO-NET model (i.e. environmental impact, risk, cost and speed) would lead to solutions that industry wants and needs.
